Luapula Province Profile

Land size and Location

Luapula Province covers an area of 50,567 sq. km. It lies between latitudes 8 degrees and 12.4 degrees south and longitude 28 – 30 degrees east. It shares boundaries with Northern Province to the east, the Democratic Republic of Congo to the West and Central Province to the South. It comprises of four main physical features namely, the plateau, the lakes, the valley and swamps. Its altitude range between 900m above sea level in the valley to 1,300 m on the Kawambwa Plateau. Approximately 40% of the total land area is covered by water bodies.

Demography

Luapula Province has a population of 979,663 out which 457,653 are women while 455, 576 are male. The population density is approximately 19.4% while the population growth rate stands at 3.2%.  Mansa which the Provincial headquarters has a population of 233, 586 out which 116,270 are male while 117,316 are female. The province is divided into seven districts Mansa, Samfya, Nchelenge, Kawambwa, Mwense, Milenge and Chienge. Mansa is the administrative headquarters and the main urban centre of the province.

Economy

Fishing and farming are the main economic activities of the population in Luapula Province. An estimated 60% of the people in the province are directly or indirectly involved in the fishing industry. Cassava is the main food crop grown. The other crops grown are maize, tea, millet, groundnuts, sweet potatoes, rice and bananas. Kawambwa Tea Company is the only company major currently operating in the province after the closure of Mansa Batteries and Mununshi Banana Scheme.

The Province has a lot of potential for tourism development and mining. It has 8 waterfalls namely Lumangwe, Ntumbacushi, Kabwelume, Chilongo, Finkula, Kundabwika, Mumbuluma and Mubotuta falls. The sandy beaches of Lakes Mweru and Bangweulu are very attractive. The province also has wildlife and birds. There are mineral deposits of copper ore, iron, manganese, gemstones, silver, iron among others.
